Based on the naming, you might be surprised to learn that the Ford Bronco Sport and the Ford Bronco are two distinct SUV models. Both feature cute styling that focuses on a square body and round headlamps. However, the details make each model a different choice for different buyers.
Differences in Size and Shape
The Ford Bronco Sport is a unibody system built on the same frame as the Ford Escape crossover. It does use different springs and dampers so the Ford Bronco Sport is a superior off-road performer compared to the Ford Escape. Likewise, the compact design can make it ideal for maneuvering in tight off-road areas, parking lots, alleys, and other locations where room around the SUV is scarce.
Conversely, the Ford Bronco is one of the increasingly rare body-on-frame mid-size SUVs. It builds off the truck frame for the Ford Ranger. The main advantage of building body-on-frame is that this frame will withstand the forces of a swaying trailer better. It also will hold up better when the vehicle lands hard during off-road travel.
Both vehicles are excellent off-road SUVs. However, the mainline Ford Bronco is the choice if you expect to beat the heck out of your vehicle or do lots of towing. The Ford Bronco Sport is a better choice if you're concerned about fuel economy, parking space, maneuverability, and handling.
